John’s book of the Bible is one of my favorites and I love his passage about Jesus’ teaching on the vine and the branches. Jesus was so good at helping us understand things by using parables~ stories using mind pictures to help understand. Like one of my favorites is His Word on the vine and the branches. The people of His time had grape vineyards. So look at this Scripture where He uses them to teach about our relationship:

(Painting by Heidi Jung)

John 15:1-5, I am the true Vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that continues to bear fruit, He [repeatedly] prunes, so that it will bear more fruit [even richer and finer fruit].

3 You are already clean because of the word which I have given you [the teachings which I have discussed with you]. 4 Remain in Me, and I [will remain] in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself without remaining in the vine, neither can you [bear fruit, producing evidence of your faith] unless you remain in Me.

5 I am the Vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him bears much fruit, for [otherwise] apart from Me [that is, cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing. We all know that when a branch is cut off of a bush or a tree or a vine, it cannot survive for long.

Just so, when we cut ourself off from Jesus and His teachings, we will spiritually wither and die. But so long as we remain connected to Him and His teachings, and allow Jesus’ Holy Spirit to dwell within us, accepting God as the Master Vine dresser to work in our life, we will continue to grow into a healthy fruit producing “branch”.

The Master Vinedresser does sometimes have to prune us, and that can be uncomfortable; but it is necessary for us to grow stronger and bring forth juicy fruit. Sometimes we begin to fall into shade as other vines cover us, but the Father will prune them  away so we can get the full Sonshine necessary. God may prune friends who are not the best influence on us, or it could be an activity or even a job.

So do not fear if God is pruning you; just trust Him and spend more time with Him so you can grow in understanding.

My friends, it’s a wonderful choice to allow Jesus to flow through us; it produces health and happiness. Seek Him today and increase joy in your life everyday.
