What are God's laws of life?
They are His directions on leading a good happy life. They are the Ten Commandments and Jesus boiled them down to Two Commandments: Love God with your whole heart and your whole soul and love your neighbor as yourself. But to understand we must know more details of the Ten Commandments God gave first:
Exodus 20:1-17 (NIV)
The Ten Commandments
And God spoke all these words:
2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.
4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, [from Message Version]I’m a most jealous God, punishing the children for any sins their parents pass on to them to the third, and yes, even to the fourth generation of those who hate me
6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7 “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
Here is the Message version. I like the clarity of this version for today:
7 No using the name of God, your God, in curses or silly banter; God won’t put up with the irreverent use of his name.
8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
13 “You shall not murder.
14 “You shall not commit adultery.
15 “You shall not steal.
16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
God gave us these laws not so He could tell us what to do, but so that we could live in harmony with God, our fellow man/women, and ourselves. It is because He loves us so much that He desires to help us to be whom He created us to be.
For us it’s a matter in choosing whom we will serve. Will it be the world and it’s culture as belonging to the enemy, or will it be God who created the earth in beauty for us to live in, and to enjoy getting to know Him and growing to love Him as He loves us. Let's compare them:
!] God loves us
The devil hates us
2] God sent Jesus to redeem us.
The devil tries to entrap us in evil
3] God sends Holy Spirit to guide, guard and lead us.
The devil sends lies and deceptions to mislead us
4] God brings comfort in sorrow.
Devil sends demons to torment us.
5] God has planned a glorious eternity of joy for us
Devil has planned an eternity of hatred and pain for us.
Which choice sounds good to you? On earth the world abounds in fleshly pleasures of all kinds. These may seem like fun, but they end up in degradation and despoiling of man’s highest nature. To live under the discipline of God is to become all that we are created to be; it’s fulfilling the purpose God put within each of us. It will give our lives meaning and the joy of accomplishment.
It also enables a close relationship with our Creator. It is like the “walking in the garden together” discussing things with God and enjoying each other’s company. This kind of companionship is the kind of bond that can develop between us and God. He is always with us and promises to never fail us.
. . . for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!]
Remember Jesus sent His Holy Spirit to indwell us, and He is God, and He loves us too. Holy Spirit, working in us, is a powerful force and connection with God. What can you do when you have God revealing His plan for your life, and then helping you to do the work He requires for that good plan to be fulfilled! Oh my goodness! What more can we ask?
