Last night at a friends house there was a small party where some good discussions were going on, and it was quite enjoyable. We were on their beautiful back deck which is elevated and displays a variety of tall lush trees. Looking over the railing we could see a stone path leading down the hill. In the distance were the mountains lifting their tops up above the trees. It was a lovely place for a party! But that night it grew into something much more!
Evening skies with a lovely sunset announced it was time to go. People were beginning to depart, but a lid was missing from a container, so I went back out onto the deck to see if it had been left. As the door to the house (and the noise) shut, I walked slowly up to the railing. The sun had dipped below the mountain, and night now reigned.
With the darkness came a slight coolness and a soft breeze. Unnoticed, our host flipped a switch that revealed lights hanging randomly high up in the tree branches. One hanging had five shapes brilliantly colored hanging from each other like jewels in the darkness. Off to the right was a white oriental lantern softly glowing. Through the trees on the left the far off city lights gleamed in their hues of red, orange, white and even some blue. Small lights below illuminated the path directing night travelers along the way.
But what captured my heart was the silence punctuated only by night noises~ the breeze in the leaves, bug chatter, and far away traffic. Otherwise the stillness was amazing, and the dark sky punctuated by a full moon and the stars seemed to sweep me into the universe where God was watching over me. I could feel His presence, and my being expanded in peace and quiet joy. I would have loved to just stay there and rest a few hours. But alas it was departure time.
On occasion God seems able to just capture my spirit for a little stroll with Him. Just being in His presence is a joy. Sometimes it is just a short period; other times it goes longer, but I am grateful for the visits either way. It allows me still today to return to that deck in my mind and re-experience my walk with Him. Recollecting these small surprises brings a smile to my face.
Does God do this with you too?
