Rescue in the Midst of the Storm

The Book of Psalms in the Bible have some of the most powerful lessons; perhaps it's because Psalms seem to connect more to the emotions and so our hearts and spirits can grab onto the truths and relate to them.

One example is in Psalm 107 where we get a glimpse of God’s great power. Ships tossed about in the plunging waves of a stormy sea can only do their best to stay afloat, and those staggering aboard the ships face fears of death.

Sometimes we find ourselves in the midst of roaring winds of attack falling into watery troughs, or being lifted high and thrown crashing down again. Our storms are not usually physical, but involve our souls. Our emotions ‘feel’ the storm, our minds fear the unknown, and our wills are uncertain~ unless and until they remember the greatness of our God and cry out to Him in distress. Our loving God is able to hush the storm to a gentle whisper and restore peace to our troubled souls.

Our God rescues us from our own mistakes, if in repentance we go to Him. Let's look at these verses:

Psalm 107:23-31 Some go down to the sea and travel over it in ships to do business in great waters; 24 These see the works of the Lord and His wonders in the deep. 25 For He commands and raises up the stormy wind, which lifts up the waves of the sea. 26 [Those aboard] mount up to the heavens, they go down again to the deeps; their courage melts away because of their plight. 27 They reel to and fro and stagger like a drunken man and are at their wits’ end [all their wisdom has come to nothing].

28 Then they cry to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses. 29 He hushes the storm to a calm and to a gentle whisper, so that the waves of the sea are still. 30 Then the men are glad because of the calm, and He brings them to their desired haven.

31 Oh, that men would praise [and confess to] the Lord for His goodness and loving-kindness and His wonderful works to the children of men!

Never believe that as born-again believers we will not make mistakes, for we are still humans building our highway to God. Storms will hit and try to knock us off course, or sometimes attempt to destroy us. Through them we learn and we grow; we learn and we grow. We can grasp new truths through our mistakes, and as we seek our merciful God in repentance, He bring us to safe harbor. Romans 8 promises it:

Romans 8:28 (NKJV) And we know that all things work together for good
to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Our heavenly Father loves us so much, that He has mercy on us and desires for us to step out and grow closer to Him, but He knows we do not always choose wisely, and so He has made a way to help us. We trust in our almighty God, and the promises of His Word, and our life will continue to find the right tools for building a successful highway from our heart to God’s heart. And joy will pave the road as our relationship with God deepens.

We praise our God on high for His goodness and loving-kindness and His wonderful works to the children of men!
