Tossing and turning unable to shut off my mind. Like a merry-go-round, thoughts circle round and round. Sleep sits on the edge unable to take over. Have you had nights like this? One idea, one upcoming event, one fear, one something is hanging on the turning wheel and refuses to let go.
Finally I give up and get up. 2:00AM. Darkened room. Cold. I huddle in a soft blanket on the couch. In the black of night there is still ambient light from stars and the moon. A few street lights make car passage safe, but mainly it’s a quiet time. Almost all people are home resting for the morrow’s activities. Sitting in this dimly lit room, it feels like a gentle time, a peaceful time. The ever circling recedes, and my mind is able to refocus. God, You are good. Froth of earlier frustration has mellowed into pudding smooth peace and communication with my God, full and rich with contentment. Thanks Lord.
Philippians 4:6 (MSG)
Do not be anxious about anything,
but in every situation, by prayer and petition,
with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Smiling, I pick up a book and read to get the mind totally off the circling and fully into a peaceful environment. Soon I return to bed and a restful slumber.
Do you have nights like this? What do you do?
