Holy Spirit. Who Is He?

Mystery. Enormous power! Fascination. All describe the Holy Spirit, yet He is often treated as “low man on the totem pole” ~ no disrespect intended, but because we have a difficult time understanding just who this third person of the Trinity is and what is His function, He often gets overlooked or ‘sits under’ the Father and Jesus. I decided to begin a small personal study to see what I could discover about the Holy Spirit. I found intrigue and immense power! John Bevere wrote a dynamic book called The Holy Spirit which is very helpful!

First I was shown that Jesus dependence on the Holy Spirit was immense! He did not speak except what the Holy Spirit gave Him; Jesus’ works were also through the Holy Spirit, and Jesus called Him “Father”:

John 14:10 (NKJV) Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works

“Father who dwells in Me does the works” ~ Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit:

Matthew 1:20 (AMP) But as he was thinking this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary [as] your wife, for that which is conceived in her
is of (from, out of) the Holy Spirit.

Holy Spirit provided the seed, or was the ‘Father’ of Jesus as shown above. Jesus and Holy Spirit worked together throughout Jesus’ life. Jesus said He spoke only what the Spirit told Him, and the works He did were from Holy Spirit.
Jesus said we could do greater works than He did, but it is not from our power, but from the power of Holy Spirit within us. We need Holy Spirit working within us to live a life with any power.

So how does this happen? is Holy Spirit within everyone? No. Jesus said:

John 14:15-18  (NKJV)
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.

16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him,
for He dwells with you and will be in you.
18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

“Another helper”. The word ‘another’ in Greek is ‘allos’ or another of the same kind. . .  Jesus says God will send us another like “Me”, Jesus.

This verse above says to receive the Holy Spirit we must love Jesus and show it by keeping His commandments. Looking at Scriptures we notice Holy Spirit came upon Jesus after he submitted to Holy Spirit's leading to spend 40 days fasting in the desert. Then at His baptism by John Holy Spirit came upon Him. Hereafter, Holy Spirit  was the guide for Jesus and worked with Him to fulfill the commission on Jesus’ life.
When we choose to love Jesus obeying His commands and accepting His amazing gift of redemption on the cross, we become born again creatures, new inside and out. We invite Holy Spirit in, and our cleansed nature now allows Holy Spirit to dwell within us as He did in Jesus.

As He did in Jesus? Oh, yes! Holy Spirit is a gentleman and will never force us to do anything against our will, but if we invite Him to live His life in us, nothing will be impossible to us.  Luke 1:37(NKJV) For with God nothing will be impossible.” Also Matthew 17:20 tells us ‘with faith. . .
if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. (NKJ)

Holy Spirit working in us enables Him to perform great works through us. As Jesus' mission was accomplished with the indwelling Holy Spirit working, leading, speaking through Jesus, so shall our life mission be accomplished. We shall become who we were created to be as we submit to Holy Spirit’s indwelling Presence.

Do you want to live a life of power?
