Matthew 16:15-18 (AMP)
15 He said to them, But who do you [yourselves] say that I am?
Jesus is asking what is in their hearts concerning Him. And it is a question for us today as well. Who is Jesus in our lives? Is He Messiah, Savior to us? Have we accepted Jesus to be the Lord of our lives? Do we spend time daily building our relationship with Him, so we truly KNOW Him and His character? Only then can we trust Him to be God, the Son of the Most High! Only then can we give all our selves to Him to rule and reign over us fully. Only then can we trust Him in the most difficult situations; when that occurs, we have no fear ever!
16 Simon Peter replied, You are the Christ,
the Son of the living God.
17 Then Jesus answered him, Blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) are you, Simon Bar-Jonah. For flesh and blood [men] have not revealed this to you, but My Father Who is in heaven.
Man could not have known this, that Jesus was the Son of God, that He was the Messiah, so only God could have revealed this truth to Peter. God will instruct us in truth if we are open to His teaching. Holy Spirit is a great Teacher! We must be always listening and obedient.
18 And I tell you, you are Peter [Greek, Petros—a large piece of rock], and on this rock [Greek, petra—a huge rock like Gibraltar] I will build My church, and the gates of Hades (the powers of the infernal region) shall not overpower it [or be strong to its detriment or hold out against it].
The Catholic church has been attacked by satan in many areas, especially by the sexual crimes perpetrated against children, and the attempt to hide the crimes. Men have been tempted and given in to satan, and his attempt to bring down that church has been vicious. But with strong leadership devoted to Christ, their battle can be won.
The Church, the whole Body of Christ, those devoted to Jesus and living according to His commands, all have been under a conniving, deceiving, and vigorous evil attack. Christians around the world are in a battle as satan’s army is following a long range plan and finding success. However, he never knew who Jesus was and what His strategy contained.
Jesus has given us the weapons for this war as mentioned in Wednesday’s blog [Ephesians 6], and so we have the victory, if we choose to follow God in perfect trust. Jesus said satan can never overpower His church, but we, as His church, must be prepared to stand strong. Our commitment to our God must be the signaling force applying the power of God in this battle. Listen to our “General”, the Holy Spirit, and follow His Word of command.
Seek the face of God, the heart of our God, and find an incredible love for us, a personal love that enfolds us individually in a cocoon of special attention and care. As we construct our own unique highway to God’s heart, we have Him as our strong foundation, our faith as the sturdy pilings, Jesus as our stress-relieving footing, the Word as our massive columns, with rebars of the Word to strengthen the cement of our life highway, and Holy Spirit as the guardrails and signs that take us straight to the heart of our Almighty God! [From Cast Up A Highway]
If the habit of spending time daily with God is not yet formed, it is time, for the battles will become more dangerous, and we will need His strength.
