Going through ferocious storms, being presented with immense mountains that must be climbed, encountering a giant of darkness, all situations in life are simply opportunities to gain new strength. In the Word, David is a great example of one who relied on and trusted in God in his struggles.
David went through deep distress in His life. He pleased the Lord well, because He always relied on and trusted in the Lord. Psalm 143 is a great example of his thought patterns:
A David Psalm: 1-2 Listen to this prayer of mine, God; pay attention to what I’m asking.Answer me—you’re famous for your answers! Do what’s right for me.But don’t, please don’t, haul me into court; not a person alive would be acquitted there.
3-6 The enemy hunted me down; he kicked me and stomped me within an inch of my life. He put me in a black hole, buried me like a corpse in that dungeon. I sat there in despair, my spirit draining away, my heart heavy, like lead.
David is hurting, but He still relies on God. He brought to mind what God had done for him in the past~
I remembered the old days, went over all you’ve done, pondered the ways you’ve worked, Stretched out my hands to you, as thirsty for you as a desert thirsty for rain.
He was feeling dry and burned out, so he went to God with thirsty soul knowing only God could fill and satisfy him.
Hurry with your answer, God! I’m nearly at the end of my rope. Don’t turn away; don’t ignore me! That would be certain death. If you wake me each morning with the sound of your loving voice, I’ll go to sleep each night trusting in you.Point out the road I must travel; I’m all ears, all eyes before you.
Save me from my enemies, God—you’re my only hope!Teach me how to live to please you, because you’re my God.Lead me by your blessed Spirit into cleared and level pastureland.
David knew he could trust God to encourage him and to save him. He asked God to be his teacher and guide, to take him where he needed to go ~ to a place of peace and rest in God’s Spirit.
Keep up your reputation, God—give me life! In your justice, get me out of this trouble! In your great love, vanquish my enemies; make a clean sweep of those who harass me.
Because I’m your servant.
David knew he could ask God to save him, because he had served God faithfully all his life.
If we serve God, are obedient to His commands, we too can have that same trust in God, and He will do whatever is necessary to help us. David called for God to get him out of his trouble. We can pray the same and trust God to get us out of or own troubles. The real key is believing in and trusting God with our whole heart; then our loving Father will always help us; He is faithful.
