The other day I was having coffee with an unbeliever who did not know why Jesus had to die. So I did my best to answer her. See what you think of my answer:
What did Jesus accomplish by His crucifixion and death? In the beginning when God created Adam and Eve, He, being all knowing, knew they would betray Him with the free will He had given them. So He made plans with Jesus to redeem mankind from this terrible sin, to rescue us out of the clutches of the conniving and deceits of satan.
In fulfillment of this plan Jesus came to earth as a human being through a woman named Mary. God was His Father and Mary was His mother. Jesus as God-man grew up in a Jewish community with Mary’s husband Joseph as His surrogate father. Jesus knew His 2-purpose mission was to teach us about the nature and character of Father God demonstrating our potential relationship with Father God; and the second reason was to pay the sin debt of humanity by suffering and dying on the cross. This involved Jesus loving us enough to go through horrendous human suffering for us.
Jesus bought our freedom from the curse laid on humanity by Adam’s sin. Understand we were created with a mind free from evil thoughts. It was satan who deceived Adam into believing his lies and disobeying God. This laid a curse on humanity which also brought disease and sickness with it. God created us pure and in divine health. How ideal paradise would have been if Adam had not chosen to betray God; but he did, and that left all of humanity living under the curse of satan’s evil affecting every area of life.
However, God loves us too much to leave us there. He sent His Son to free us from the curse. The book of Galatians teaches us a little more about this:
Christ redeemed us from that self-defeating, cursed life
by absorbing it completely into himself.Do you remember the Scripture that says, "Cursed is everyone who
hangs on a tree"? That is what happened when Jesus was nailed to the cross: He became a curse, absorbing all curses into Himself
and at the same time dissolved the curse. the curse Adam brought to the human race by his betrayal of God was absorbed by Jesus into Himself freeing us from it. We accept Your gift of freedom from those curses!Thank You, Jesus!
Yes, Jesus freed us from the curse. All we need to do to receive this freedom is to acknowledge our sin and repent of it, accept Jesus’ free gift and invite Him to live in us as Lord of our life. A wonderful paradigm shift will take place when we do, for it opens the door for us to enjoy an intimate relationship with God Himself! The book Cast Up A Highway teaches how to develop this relationship. If this is new to you, take it into your heart and enjoy a life filled with new hope, new life, new courage and joy.
