It's Not My LIfe

Have you ever watched God use things in your past to demonstrate a Biblical truth? He has used many things from novels to movies to TV programs to help me understand concepts.  His love for us is marvelous; His understanding of our nature as individual human beings is beyond comprehension, but oh so delightful!

Today I find He wants me to know more about Holy Spirit and His indwelling presence and I would like to share this journey with you:
He led me first to something Rees Howells, a mighty man of prayer, shared: The meeting with the Holy Ghost was just as real to Rees Howells as his meeting with the Savior those years before. "I saw Him as a Person apart from flesh and blood, and He said to me, 'As the Savior had a body, so I dwell in the cleansed temple of the believer. I am a Person. I am God, and I am come to ask you to give your body to Me that I may work through it. I need a body for My temple,

1 Corinthians 6:19 (AMP) Do you not know that your body is the temple (the very sanctuary) of the Holy Spirit Who lives within you, Whom you have received [as a Gift] from God? You are not your own.

but it must belong to Me without reserve, for two persons with different wills can never live in the same body. Will you give Me yours?”

Romans 12:1 (AMP)I appeal to you therefore, brethren, and beg of you in view of [all] the mercies of God, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies [presenting all your members and faculties] as a living sacrifice, holy (devoted, consecrated) and well pleasing to God, which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service and spiritual worship.

Then God said: "But if I come in, I come as God, and you must go out."

So what does this mean? How does this happen? How do we get our finite minds around this concept? God reminded me of a science fiction movie I had seen long ago where outer space creatures invaded earth and would come into a body, take it over, and use it for their own evil purposes. The person would look the same, but the actions were not their own. The purposes of the invaders would be accomplished through the snatched bodies.

Of course, there are some huge differences here with Holy Spirit. Number one: it is our choice to invite Holy Spirit into ourselves. Rees writes that the Lord does not want to just “indwell us”, but He desires us to “sacrifice” our bodies to Him ~ allow Him to live His life through our bodies:

God told Rees: "There is all the difference in the world between your surrendered life in My hands, and Me living My life in your body."

A second difference is that the work God does through us is always good, never evil. Now it gets even more exciting: with Holy Spirit God living in us, our spirit and His are intermingled ~ shared in a sense. He speaks to us through His spirit, Holy Spirit, and we respond to Him through our spirit. A picture came to my mind from another film where a 'medicine man' was sitting before a fire; smoke was rising, and he threw something into the fire; there was a small explosion and the resulting smoke had a new color and spicy aroma. I kind of 'saw' my plain spirit, then Holy Spirit entered my spirit and my aroma, my being, changed completely.

A thought to keep in mind: God said He communicates through the spirit; when we pray and worship Him we do it through our spirit as God commands:
John 4:23-24 (Message) “It’s who you are and the way you live that count before God. Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth. That’s the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship. God is sheer being itself—Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration.”

Now think about this: Finally and most awesome: we have Almighty God living His life in us, if we allow it. What power that can give us! The devil has no ability to harm us as we stand against him with God in us! Our prayer life becomes extremely potent and forceful. Awesome!!

One caveat we must remember is what God told Rees: "But if I come in, I come as God, and you must go out."

Yes, all the imperfections in us must be fixed; all evil temptations we have must be overcome. We submit to God’s cleansing fire just as gold is heated up until the impurities come to the top and are scooped off by the goldsmith; the gold becomes purified. We are gold to our loving Father, and He will help us see and deal with the impurities in our lives, until He sees His reflection in us.
