There’s a pumpkin on my counter just sitting there full of potential. He could become a jack-o-lantern with funny teeth, triangle eyes, and a candle inside. That reminds me of the email I got that says God does that to us: takes off our top, reaches down inside us and scrapes out all the junk, puts His light in us, and puts the top back on. I thought that was pretty cool. I’ll never see a pumpkin again without thanking God for His work in me.
But there is still this pumpkin sitting on my counter full of potential. My appetite is calling for some delicious recipes using squash, but have you noticed how expensive it has gotten? However, I found pumpkins at this time are lower in price, and there are tasty ways of serving up this yummy vegetable too. I believe this pumpkin will be sacrificed on our table for dinner.
Speaking of sacrifice, the Word says we are “to sacrifice our body”. How do we do that? It was always one Scripture that puzzled me. Then one day a revelation came to me. Let’s look at Romans 12. It is especially clear to me in the Message version:
Romans 12:1-3(MSG) Place Your Life Before God
So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for Him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what He wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.
3 I’m speaking to you out of deep gratitude for all that God has given me, and especially as I have responsibilities in relation to you. Living then, as every one of you does, in pure grace, it’s important that you not misinterpret yourselves as people who are bringing this goodness to God. No, God brings it all to you. The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what He does for us, not by what we are and what we do for Him.
Truly God does it all for us. Jesus has given us Holy Spirit to indwell us, which means God Himself lives in us. We can sacrifice our bodies by allowing Holy Spirit God to live His life in us. We do not live our life having Holy Spirit living in us, but we ask Holy Spirit to live His life in us ~ we sacrifice our body to Him to live His life in / through our body. In this way we sacrifice our body to Him, and we reap the benefit of God Himself leading our life.
God does scrape the junk out of us as we submit to Him ~ the seeds of doubt, the strings of pride, the slime of hate and greed. Then He is the illumination in us and we shine with His love and grace; others can see the radiance through our eyes and our smiles. We become a light to others as we perform the daily deeds Holy Spirit does through us. Jesus shining love within us draws others to desire to know Him too.
