Christmas, the season of joy and love. Season of my youth when happiness permeated the atmosphere. Lights sparkled in the night turning homes into precious jewels. Colorful Christmas trees stood in windows showing the outside world that Christ was born! Yes, we are celebrating a season of great joy, when wisemen came to worship the Lord God born in a humble manger and announced by a magnificent star.
My Dad loved Christmas and our traditions, as we sat around the tree sharing gifts with each other while joyful songs of Christmas anointed the atmosphere, and colorful flames cracked and popped in the fireplace. What tremendous memories!
Contrasting that are other people who did not grow up with such tender memories to hold them and lift them above troubles. This season, suppose to be representing happiness and joy, is a sharp contrast for the hurting and suffering ones without answers. Unfortunately, it is a time of many suicides, and sadly enough some of them are young people who have not been taught about the love of Jesus and His power to overcome difficulties, pain, and suffering. How that hurts my heart! Heights of joy to the depths of pain.
A young man shakes the hand of the police officer thanking him for his kindness, successfully hiding the suffering of his soul. Darkness fills his mind. Loneliness fills his heart. Downcast features, as he walks off, show the inner pain, the loss of hope as the enemy speaks lies into his mind. Silent unspoken words roll around in his head spreading poison, spinning off evil thoughts. His mind is made up to just end the pain, end the life.
Where is the light? God provides the light, but our society is doing all it can to suppress the light, to kick God out from our lives, and too many are willing to let it continue. Depression, darkness, loneliness, and lack of real love will produce more suicides, and a culture without God will promote it.
Where else does one go with the emasculated feelings when out of work and there is no money to feed the kids? The state? Where does one go when one suffers the devastating loss of a loved one to death or divorce? The state? Where does one go when a treasured child is attacked by a deadly cancer? The state? Where does one go when the war has left one with terror filled memories and dreams? The state? Where does one go when there is no one who cares deeply or provides the love we all must have to function well? The state? Where does the crushed heart of a teenager go when a teen love turns their back? The state? Where does the youth go when they have failure programed into them by faulty parenting and a failed school system? The state? Without God there will be only darkness.
Can you see a heavy hearted person and not tell them God loves them, or not show the love of God flowing through you? Ask Holy Spirit to open your eyes to see the hurting person that no one else notices. Perhaps there is just one person you can notice and give from your heart ~ could be just a word of encouragement and friendship, or perhaps an invitation to dinner, or an anonymous financial gift. Take time out of this busy season to live the meaning of the season, to share Christ love personally with someone who desperately needs it. Ask God to lead you to that person and reveal how you can touch them. Consider it your assignment for this Christmas season. Help spread the light.
