Psalm 77:16-19 (The Message)
Ocean saw you in action, God,
saw you and trembled with fear;
Deep Ocean was scared to death.
Clouds belched buckets of rain,
Sky exploded with thunder,
your arrows flashing this way and that.
From Whirlwind came your thundering voice,
Lightning exposed the world,
Earth reeled and rocked.
You strode right through Ocean,
walked straight through roaring Ocean,
but nobody saw you come or go.
Our marvelous and mighty God, Creator of the universe and all things therein. I love this verse in the Message Bible as it demonstrates with words how grand and magnificent our God is!
This verse speaks to my spirit! God works in powerful ways, yet who recognizes it? Who gives thanks? Who stands in awe? I like to stand in a mighty wind and have its power push me. I revel in an ocean who’s waves are crashing on the shore! Thunderstorms do hold me in awe. These very evident manifestations of His dominion are food for worship. My spirit bows down to Him in recognition of His glory!
Bringing this down to a more personal note, how many less flamboyant ways does God work in our lives that we do not recognize? He is always working in our lives although often it is behind the scenes. Think of the lady who spilled coffee on her dress and had to go change it and was late for work at the World Trade center on 9/11; or the guy who had to stop at the drug store for a band-aid; or the mom who’s child soiled their clothes just as they were walking out the door on 9/11. Because of these small inconveniences making them late, all of them were saved from probable death.
Have you left the house later than planned because of a phone call? Gotten into a traffic jam? Had a flat tire? Do you ever think these could well be God working behind the scenes in your life saving you from some potential disaster or harmful situation?
The scripture says, “but nobody saw you come or go”. Do we recognize God in the behind the scenes work He does in our life? Do we think to say ‘Thank You’? Can we change irritation to thankfulness when ‘inconveniences’ happen to delay us on our important journey? Can we trust God will get us there at the right time?
It may be a kind of paradigm shift in thinking. He loves us so much He is always with us, doing things for us. Often we do not ‘see Him come or go', and give thanks. Have you had a recent experience of God working behind the scenes in your life? Share it if you wish.
